Core Values of My Work

Introduction

Psychological work is grounded in trust. This trust arises not only from professional knowledge, but above all from a clear and consistent stance. The following principles define the professional foundation of my work and provide transparency regarding the way confidential exchanges are conducted. They serve as a point of orientation and reference — for those who engage with me and for myself.

Preamble: Human dignity as an inherent foundation

Dignity is inherent to every human being by virtue of being human. It cannot be earned or increased. It cannot be denied or questioned. Dignity does not arise from achievement, nor is it diminished by the absence of achievement.

Do no harm

Psychological work must never become an instrument of harm and resists any form of instrumentalization.

Freedom from External Interests

I work free from institutional, economic, or ideological interests. My assessments and decisions are guided solely by professional criteria and by the factual analysis of the situation at hand.

There are no external directives, objectives, or influences that steer or limit my work. This independence ensures that every consideration serves only the understanding of the situation and not the fulfillment of external expectations.

Equal access through discretion

Discretion ensures that individuals can seek psychological expertise regardless of public role or social position. It protects confidentiality and creates a secure space for people with particular needs for protection.

Minimal trace

Psychological work entails the obligation not to preserve content beyond the exchange itself. Spoken words remain within the moment of interaction; I do not document, store, or retain them in any form.

Minimal trace is an ethical principle: content belongs to the person who speaks it and remains entirely within their sphere of control.

Right to a non-pathologizing perspective

Psychological expertise refrains from pathologizing labels. Perceptions and behaviors are understood as functional responses to burdens or circumstances. The aim is a more precise understanding of the situation, not classification into diagnostic categories.

Right to self-definition

The definition of one’s identity rests with the individual. Which aspects of their biography or present life are relevant is determined by the person themselves.

Universal belonging instead of selective inclusion

My work is directed at human beings. This is the only criterion.

Authority over one’s own past

Individuals have the right to interpret their past through the lens of their own perspective. Memories are not treated as objective historical data, but as personal constructions that belong to the individual. Psychological exchanges support the conscious reflection of these perspectives without prescribing or evaluating them.

Assessment in its proper time

Past actions may only be evaluated based on the knowledge available at the time they were taken. The circumstances of that period must also be considered. Assessments are always made within their historical context.

Protection of memory and identity

Psychological work takes into account neurobiological insights on reconsolidation and the potential distortion of memories through suggestive questioning or premature interpretation, and maintains technical and organizational measures to protect sensitive memory content — and thus the identity of the conversation partner — throughout the process. The protection of memory is treated as a data-protection principle: primary, binding, and non-negotiable.

Open-source psychology

Psychological work is committed to transparency. Conversation partners have the right to understand which considerations are applied, for what reasons, and with what possible effects. Communication is conducted in clear and comprehensible language.

Scientific Breadth

My work is grounded in findings from psychological basic research and related scientific disciplines. What matters to me is the connection to robust, empirically supported models that offer coherent explanations of human experience and behavior.

I draw on a range of scientific perspectives as long as they are consistent, theoretically sound, and professionally compatible. This breadth makes it possible to understand complex situations in a differentiated way without committing to specific traditions or schools of thought.

Methodological Independence

I work without reference to therapeutic schools, standardized procedures, or market-driven concepts. Such systems do not represent a scientific foundation for me and are therefore not part of my work.

What matters is the scientific validity of the assumptions used to understand a situation. This independence protects against predefined interpretive frameworks and enables a clear, self-reliant, and professionally robust perspective.

Right to independence from the process

Psychological work strengthens self-regulation and must not create dependency. Information is conveyed in a way that enables individuals to remain capable of acting independently. The goal is sustainable autonomy.

Respect for non-negotiable convictions

Psychological work acknowledges that individuals may hold convictions or inner “sacred places” that are not negotiable — temporarily or permanently. Rather than challenging them, they are respected as fixed points. This respect allows their gravitational pull to be used “in passing,” turning what is unchangeable into a source of effective development rather than an obstacle.

Clarity about purpose

If exchanges are not, or no longer, purposeful, this is communicated openly. If necessary, the collaboration is concluded to preserve transparency and integrity.

Exclusively human-to-human

All psychological work in my practice is based on direct human interaction. Every message — administrative or substantive — is read and answered personally by me, Karl-Heinz Meisters. Neither staff nor technical systems take over this part of the process. Responsibility, confidentiality, and the quality of the encounter remain entirely in my hands.

Ongoing professional development

Psychological work requires continuous professional development. New scientific insights are systematically reviewed and integrated into existing practice when they are robust and coherent. Changes are implemented responsibly and only when a new foundation is professionally sound.
