Psychology as the Science of Normality

A conceptual definition

Psychology is the science of experience and behaviour. It classifies and explains how human functioning becomes intelligible. It accounts for the diversity of human experience without assigning value or judgement.

Psychology is the science of normality. To frame it primarily as a discipline of disorders is to reduce it to a marginal segment of its own field.

General Psychology and the Human Psychological Operating System

General Psychology is the subdiscipline that describes the psychological operating system of the human being: perception, memory, thinking, emotion, attention, learning. These fundamental processes are shared by all humans — independent of origin, gender or resources. Every form of individual experience rests upon them. General Psychology therefore provides the basis for the classification of psychological dynamics.

Normal Responses and Emergency Modes

Many phenomena that are hastily pathologised today are, in fact, normal responses to strain or conflict. Anxiety under exhaustion often functions as a protective mechanism. Reduced drive in approach–avoidance conflicts is a logical consequence of competing goals. Such processes belong to the normality of human experience — they are not disorders.

These reactions frequently represent emergency modes of the psychological system. Under load, they maintain functioning by reallocating energy, shifting priorities or reducing activity. Misinterpreting these provisional supports as disorders — and removing them without addressing context or internal processes — interferes with stabilising functions of a system under pressure. Historically, such functions were often essential for stability or even physical survival. Approaches that disregard this can destabilise a psychological system or lead to its failure.

The Model of Psychological Classification

The applied model of psychological classification understands experience and behaviour as expressions of an internal logic that remains explainable within the context of normality. Only on this basis do the underlying mechanisms become visible. Those who understand their functional logics can govern them rather than be governed by them.

The logic of normality is not unique to psychology. Other sciences follow the same structure: geography is not the science of natural disasters; architecture is not the science of structural failures; mechanical engineering is not the science of defects. Each discipline begins with functioning and describes deviations only against this background.

Psychology in Germany has a particular tradition that supports this perspective. In 1879, Wilhelm Wundt founded the world’s first psychological laboratory in Leipzig, establishing psychology as an independent science. Hugo Münsterberg brought psychological research early into practical contexts and demonstrated that mechanisms of normal experience can be used to understand complex situations. This lineage — from foundational research to application — forms the historical framework within which General Psychology operates.

A psychologist is someone who recognises, explains and classifies this normality. It is the core of the discipline.

Normality as a Stance

I work from a perspective that understands human experience as an expression of normal functional logic. This orientation shapes my work and provides the framework within which I interpret psychological contexts.
